Smoked Out Part 41

Saturday, June 27th, 2020

Iris slipped in the slightly opened shop door and found Albert sitting in his chair at the bench with his eyes closed.

“Albert I need your help.” Iris said.

Albert jolted up out of his meditative state.

“Geez Iris you startled me.”

Albert took a deep breath to gain composure.

“Sure what do you need?”

Iris paused.

“I found an SUV that I like and I called the lot. It’s available and I want to go see it. I would like you to come with me and look it over.” Iris said.

“When do you want to go?” Albert asked.

“Soon. It’s at Anderson’s Automotive.” Iris told him.

“Okay, give me a few of minutes and I’ll be right out.”

“Oh, and Albert one more thing, when we’re at the lot, please don’t ask me if I want to look at other cars. If I see another car I want to check out or if this one has problems I will look around and let you know. I’m focused on this one.”

“Okay Iris, I understand.” Albert said softly gazing into her eyes.

Iris broke the gaze, looked down, turned around, and left.

Coming back into the house, Iris couldn’t believe the moxie she showed–if that is the right way to put it. I mean, I told him what I wanted and I did it with no hesitation she thought.

Tears welled up in her eyes.

Why is this simple thing making me so emotional she thought?

Iris took a deep breath and then let it out. Iris, this is you. This is who you are it’s who you’ve been all along.

Have you any idea how many kids it takes to turn off one light in the kitchen? Three. It takes one to say, “What light?” and two more to say, “I didn’t turn it on.”     Erma Bombeck
